8 Handy Travel Packing Hacks

Let’s face it. Packing your travel bags before a big trip can be a bit daunting. What if you forget something? Or run out of space? Will your bag be overweight?

Don’t stress! Packing your suitcase is a cinch when you know how. We’ve put together these handy travel hacks that will have you packed up and ready to go in no time.

1. The write stuff

Before you even unzip your suitcase, you should know exactly what you’re going to put in it. Write up a list of everything you’ll need for your trip. Tick things off as you go to ensure that nothing gets left behind. Be sure to write your list well in advance, so you don’t end up having to do any last-minute frantic shopping.

 2. On a roll

This smart little space-saving trick will free up a whole lot of room in your suitcase. All you have to do is roll up your clothes before packing them in. You’ll find you’re able to fit in much more, plus it’s a lot faster than folding.

 3. Whatever the weather

It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast at your destination before packing your clothes. If there’s a cold front coming or a heat wave on the way, you can pack something appropriate so you’re not left out in the cold or hot under the collar.

 4. Keep it together

Keep your bags from turning into a messy jumble by packing similar items together. Put your passports and documents into a folder or plastic ziplock bag. Store toiletries in a sealed bag so if anything leaks it won’t get onto the rest of your things. Underwear and socks should also go into their own compartment.

 5. Lighten up

Overweight bags can be costly. Find out what the weight limit is on your chosen airline carrier and make sure you don’t exceed it. Consider taking travel-size toiletries, or simply buy what you need at your destination.

 6. Clean up your act

Bring a separate bag for dirty laundry. A handy way to keep shoes from soiling your clothes is to cover the soles with disposable shower caps. Keep light-coloured clothes inside out to avoid stains. For an extra fresh touch, pop a scented drawer liner or some potpourri into your bag.

7. First Aid First

A first aid kit is a must on any trip. Pack some painkillers, band aids, insect repellent, eye drops, something for an upset stomach, and enough chronic medication for any pre-existing conditions to last your entire trip.

 8. Be bag wise

If you’re flying, be sure to keep you carry-on luggage small enough to fit into the overhead compartment. If you need to check in luggage, make it easier to spot on the carousel by adding some colourful ribbons, a badge or sticker so you know it’s yours.
