One of the founding principles of Protea Hotels is the respect for human dignity.
This principle extends not only to our GUESTS, STAFF and STAKEHOLDERS but also to the communities in which our hotels function. Over the years Protea has built a legacy of community building and upliftment, from the large scale, high visibility projects with Reach for a Dream to the more inconspicuous but equally meaningful contributions to orphanages, old age homes and educational projects. It has been said that it is more blessed to give than to receive and at Protea Hotels we strive to be a light to our communities and help to make a positive impact wherever our hotels are found.
The needs in our beloved continent are great but so is our belief that by being intentional about caring for those marginalised by society we can help reflect the beauty of life in our world.
CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT
To uplift and enhance the lives of those less fortunate in our community in a sustainable manner.
Protea Hotels is dedicated to the continuous upliftment of and social responsibility towards those less fortunate. Protea Hotels actively encourages a culture of philanthropy and community involvement amongst its employees. CSI initiatives are conducted as a TEAM effort. Our Corporate Social Investment Programme is directed at two of our identified STAKEHOLDERS being our STAFF and our COMMUNITY.
WHAT WE DO
Luxury Hotels International South Africa (Pty) Ltd – “Protea Hotels” is committed to playing a leadership role in society through active corporate citizenship. Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is viewed as an investment in the future, in our people and in the communities within which we operate.
To this end we involve ourselves, through our team, in CSI related activities in several ways:
- Protea Hotels provides ongoing support to Reach for a Dream Foundation. The Reach for a Dream Foundation works to fulfills the dreams of children between the ages of 3 and 18 years, who have been diagnosed as having a life-threatening illness by a medical practitioner. We do not discriminate based on race, culture, financial status or any other factor. Each child living with a life-threatening illness is given a chance to dream. Protea Hotels fulfilled many children’s dreams and our goal is to fulfill many more dreams in the next year. It is a humbling experience for all involved and we will continue to fulfill dreams to the best of our ability and with passion and respect.
- Through our head office we process requests for assistance through our online application system. These include grant funding, emergency relief and Donations in-kind requests.
- Within Protea Hotels, we actively encourage that all staff get involved in community development programmes as part of their contributions to community upliftment – either individually or as a department. Head Office departments are each assigned a month whereby they must initiate ways of raising money for their chosen charity. Fundraising activities can include arranging raffles, games in the office, selling food, collecting second hand clothing, shoes, collecting perishables and much more. This is usually plenty of fun for our staff, as all the involvement, planning and final results are done by the departments staff members and in turn the efforts are supported by all other staff of Protea Hotels.
- Each of our Hotels have developed their own CSI programmes which contributes to the broader reach of the Group as a whole. Hotels are encouraged to support their local communities through direct interventions which can include staff getting involved directly in projects, or the provision of small grants, emergency relief, or donations in-kind. Each year our Hotels submit a presentation of the CSI work that they have done within their respective communities. These presentations are then reviewed and voted on as part of our CSI Hotel Winner Award. Winning hotels are recognised at our Executive General Manager’s Conference. The top hotel CSI initiatives are rewarded with a financial prize which is then re-invested into their chosen charity.
In order to improve our CSI programme, Protea Hotels has developed an online application and management system. Guidelines for application of CSI assistance is available here: CSI Grant Funding Guidelines
HOW WE DO IT
This system provides for electronic applications to be processed in the following categories:
