How to maximize your public holidays in 2018
The Long Weekend Season is almost upon us, and you need to start planning if you’re going to make it a #StrongWeekend. If you look at your calendar, you’ll see that from mid-March until the very beginning of May, a few long weekend opportunities allow you to maximise your time away from the daily grind.
Let’s take a closer a look:
If you take off from Human Rights Day on 21 March and return after Easter on 3 April, you’ll be able to enjoy a13-day break, using just six leave days.
And, since the Easter Weekend coincides with school holidays, families should start planning now to take advantage of the period. You could, for example, take just four days leave (3, 4, 5 and 6 April) and gain 10 days for a family break, a romantic getaway, or a fun time with friends away from home.
This year, Freedom Day, 27 April, falls on a Friday and it’s followed by Workers’ Day on Tuesday, 1 May. So, if one takes leave on only 30 April, a five day strong weekend awaits!
Easter is always a particularly popular time for families to go away, so book accommodation and experiences well in advance to be sure that you secure what your family fancies.
With the warm weather usually stretching into April, a beach break is bound to be great. For Capetonians, a visit to the West Coast is a great idea. It’s an easy drive to get to Langebaan or Saldanha Bay, so it’s perfect for a shorter break like over a long weekend. Laze on the beach or go swimming in the Langebaan Lagoon, with its warmer waters. Our Protea Hotel in Saldanha Bay has seen an increase in people coming to the area to learn how to kitesurf because the Lagoon is perfect for beginners.
For families from Gauteng or KwaZulu-Natal, a wealth of activities awaits on the KZN coast. Karridene Beach offers both sea and river adventures, while children can be kept constantly entertained at Umhlanga, with its beach and the huge Gateway Shopping Centre. And if the kids want a break from the beach, uShaka Marine World is well within driving range.
In Johannesburg, cycling enthusiasts can take a few days off to enjoy some of the wonderful mountain biking trails South Africa has to offer. A trip to Mount Grace Country House & Spa near Rustenberg, even if it’s just for the day, is a great way for Joburgers to enjoy a long weekend, and the hotel’s Cob & Sprocket Mountain Bike Club has facilities suitable for both serious bicycling enthusiasts and the family who wants to spend a good few hours together.
A long weekend break at a destination to suit a romantic mood can rekindle the romance and a couple’s commitment to each other. Spend time together in scenic spots near the sea or mountains, and enjoy quality time together in the natural surroundings. The Arabella Hotel & Spa’s setting close to the coast near Hermanus offers breathtaking sunsets, walks in nature and the sort of luxury couples love to share.
So, get planning for one of the upcoming long weekend periods. After all, we all need some R&R!
